Update: The victims of the Niger tanker explosion have been given mass burials
Forty-eight people have been buried in mass graves after an oil tanker exploded in the Agui State area of Niger state. The incident occurred on Sunday morning when a motor vehicle collided with a motor vehicle carrying passengers and animals from Udila, Kano State. Abdullahi Baba-Arab, director of Niger’s National Emergency Management Agency, gave an update on the situation on Tuesday.
He also confirmed that the local government held a mass funeral for the 48 people whose bodies were cremated beyond recognition. He said further search and rescue operations led to the discovery of 18 more bodies out of the 30 previously reported. The NSEMA Rapid Reaction Team (RRT) and LGEMC are still conducting search and rescue operations at the accident site as several bodies are still trapped inside the truck.
Announcing the incident in his statement, he said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 00.30 WIB along the Lapai-Agaie road, 2 meters from Dendo Community kilometer. He also revealed that more than 50 cows were burnt alive and two vehicles, a crane and a pick-up truck were also caught on fire.
