Court convicts 39 Oyo internet fraudsters
Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan Area Command, have arrested 39 suspected internet fraudsters in Oyo State. EFCC spokesman Dele Oyewale disclosed this in a statement in Ibadan, the state capital, on Wednesday. The suspects were arraigned in Ibadan by Justices O.S. Adeyemi, Bayo Taiwo and Ladiran Akintola of the Oyo State High Court.
Oyewale said they would each be charged with a separate offence bordering on impersonation, fraud, possession of forged documents and obtaining by false pretenses. The convicted are Fasanya Gbolahan; Nkiri Fate; Fakoya Samuel; Owolabi Damilare; Isiaka Adebayo; Olawoyin Olasunkanmi; Olawale Abideen; Olayiwola Waheed; Kehinde Abdul-Rauf. Okunlola Abidun, Okunlola Mujeeb, Ademeso Olamide, Lawal Ridwan, Femi Oluremi, Ehinmowo Damilola, Joseph Justice, Enitan John, Kolawole Josiah, Aro Emmanuel, Adetola Idris and Joshua Siyanbola. Others include Idowu David, Salau Ayomide, Adeyemi Adeleke, Philip Olatunde, Fasanya Tunde, Seun Babatunde, Ogoayo Sijuola, Akanji Bidun, Quadri Oyindamola, Samuel Oluwatobi, Ogunyemi Opemipoji, Olabanjo Olatunbosun, Paul Uche, Ayomipoji Akinyimika. Abdullahi Adisa. Ajetunmobi Olasire. Oluwaseun Adeniran and Ona Ayomide.
The charge against Austin Ayomide reads: “You, Ayomide, on or about the 28th day of March, 2024, at Ibadan within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, impersonated yourself through her Facebook account (Linda Mary) to a person named Clifton Deininger of the United States of America, with a view to obtaining your own benefit. In so doing, you committed the offence of impersonation under Section 484 of the Penal Code of Oyo State, Laws 38 of 2000.” When the charges were read out, all pleaded guilty and then the prosecutor considered the facts of the case, prepared incriminating documents and asked the court to convict and punish accordingly. Justice Adeyemi convicted Mr. Ayomide and sentenced him to one year community service or a fine of 200,000 naira.
Tunde received one month in prison or a fine of 250,000 naira, while Abebu Ayomide, Adeleke, Babatunde, Biodun, Oyindamola, Oluwatobi, Olatunbosun, Uche, Akinyimika, Adisa, Olasile and Adeniran received six months community service and alimony payments each. They were each given a further fine of 50,000 naira as punishment, while Abebu Ayomide was fined 500,000 naira in addition to the fine. He sentenced Sijuola to one month community service or a fine of 100,000 naira. Olatunde and Opemipoji were sentenced to three months’ community service without the possibility of a fine.
